Cabo San Lucas is a resort city on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula known for its beaches, water-based activities and night life.  It is a popular port of call  for cruise ships along the Mexican Riviera.

The main tourist area is the 20-mile Tourist Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, along which lie the large resorts, golf courses and a number of bays and beaches.

Our resort was typical of the area, with two pools, 5 restaurant choices and excellent views of the yachts and cruise ships arriving daily.

Medano Beach is the only swimmable beach in Cabo San Lucas. It is active with water-taxis and jet-boats, and restaurants by the beach edge.

Resorts offer a variety of experiences, from excursions and sports activities, to night shows and cooking classes.

The hub of Cabo life is its active marina, around which there are over 70 restaurants and numerous vendors of merchandise and excursions. Nearby is the Puerto Paraiso Plaza shopping mall.

From the marina, boats enter San Lucas Bay and circle the point of land called "Land's End," to view sea life, to take whale-watching expeditions, and to go deep sea fishing.

Some beaches, such as Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach are only accessible by water taxi.

Los Arcos, a natural stone arch is the iconic symbol of Cabo. Boat tours to view it, the nearby pelican island and the abundant sea life are easily available from vendors at the marina.

Four species of dolphins and seven species of whales swim in the waters around Cabo. January to March are the height of the humpback and gray whale migrations.

Colonies of seals and sea lions and numerous sea birds inhabit the rocky coves of Land's End.

The artwork displayed in hotel lobbies and art galleries throughout the area attest to the unique perspective and talent of the Mexican people.

Vendors are active on the streets and beaches of Cabo, offering hats, T-shirts, silver jewellery, beaded bracelets, pottery, cigars and toys.

There are several locations where tequila tasting is offered.

Around Land's End point lies a more isolated area with homes and hotels on the vast Pedregal Beach on the Pacific Ocean.

We rented a condo on Pedregal where we enjoyed the peaceful desert garden, the long beach walks and the view of whales from our balcony, while still having an easy walk to the Marina.

The Pacific beaches are unsafe for swimming but offer spectacular scenery of eroded rock formations and views of sea life.

The best sunset views are from the water, hence the popularity of sunset cruises.
